CHARLES CITY — The Roseville General Store was on the move Wednesday — to a new home at the Cedar Valley Engine Club grounds.

The store, built in 1903, was closed in 1968.

Ron Holland Housemoving of Forest City slowly moved the store five or six miles along Kirkwood Avenue in rural Floyd County Wednesday as onlookers gathered to take photographs and reminisce.

Members of the Cedar Valley Engine Club hope to have the store open during its annual three-day show on Labor Day weekend.

Jake Kiefer had the store built and opened it in 1903 in the unincorporated community near Charles City known as Roseville.

It was sold two years later to Bill Hageman and two years after that it was sold to John Sinwell Jr.

The Sinwells closed the store in 1910 and used the building as a home for John Sinwell’s parents.

Peter and Dora Koenigsfeld bought the building in 1932 and turned it into a store again.

Their son, Lawrence, and his wife, Marcella, eventually took over the store. All of the couple’s 11 children spent time working there while growing up.

Donations to help restore the store may be made to the Cedar Valley Engine Club and sent to Al Koenigsfeld, 3124 230th St., Charles City, IA 50616. “Roseville store” should be written in the memo section of the check.

The Koenigsfeld family and the Cedar Valley Engine Club also are looking for items that used to be sold at the store, stories about the store and photos.
